Seventh Heaven for Fenyvesi in Hungary

Zsolt Fenyvesi retained the Hungarian National Snooker Championship last weekend – his seventh success in the event since 2010.

Held at the Terminal Snooker Club in Budapest – a venue that recently hosted a World Snooker Challenge Tour event – over 40 players competed in a straight knockout for Hungary’s most prestigious amateur title.

Defending champion Fenyvesi initially received a bye before defeating Monika Vantara-Stenocz 4-0, Istvan Bona 4-1, Balazs Csurgo 4-0 and Bulcsu Revesz 5-1 to reach yet another final.

For the third consecutive year his opponent there was second seed Attila Horvath, who had eliminated Pal Vantara 5-2 in the semi-finals. Vantara later ousted Revesz 5-4 in the third/fourth place play-off.

In the first session of the best-of-13 frames final, 29-year-old Fenyvesi made breaks of 93, 66 and 45 to help establish a 4-2 lead.

On resumption, Fenyvesi extended that advantage with an effort of 102, although Horvath was unperturbed, depositing the next three frames to level at 5-5 before a run of 55 aided him to move 6-5 up and just one away from glory.

However, Fenyvesi would deny his rival, producing a 72 break to square it up before coming through a deciding frame for a gripping 7-6 victory.
